Hello Rodney Martin,

the first part I think is very good assuming you used the right u-boat-legalese on terms like Hängematten etc. of which I have no idea.

Now to your last sentence I may suggest as follows:

The ship lying on her side had started already to sink so that I had to make my way out through the last exit possible where I was also faced with heavy inpouring water but finally managed to escape.

Hope this makes some sense.
