Down the list in the German dictionary is the word hammock.
Sailors in the old navy slept in hammocks.
So would this make sense?
Hängematten - Hammock
Hängemattskasten - Hammock locker or case
Hängemattsstangen - Hammock bars

Then
And with the horror of the fast-rising water pushing against my back I somehow found the only possible way out. Along the side of the bulkhead I quickly climbed up the large hammock locker that was attached to the external bulkhead, reaching for the cover and climbing up the bars that lined the hammock locker and crept along the bulkhead.
