How did U-Boats spot planes?

Forgive my ignorance. I am newcomer to researching U-Boats.

Could wiser contributors to this forum explain the level of technology available to U-Boats in the period of the war 1943-45 for detecting approaching enemy aircraft?

If, for example, a Wellington bomber was approaching in the dark at 50 feet with torpedoes or depth charges in the Med, how much warning would the U-Boat crew have by using search receivers and the like? How effective was their equipment under the surface? Did depth make any difference? How much did they depend on visual contact and good old binoculars? What were the ranges and how high/low in the sky could aircraft be detected?

Sorry this is such basic stuff, but we all have to start somewhere...
