Midwar German doctrinal thinking?

Been reading about the u-boat war lately and came across the info that Germany settled on a large number of medium sized boats rather than fewer bigger ones as a result of what Dönitz perceived as flaws in the WWI strategy. I assume this means he wasn't a fan of the big u-cruisers of WWI, but I can't find much more info or any books about German navy doctrine development between the wars.

I'm currently reading the excellent "Kaigun" buy Evans and Peattie which answers precisely these types of questions for the Japanese navy, so I was wondering if there is a similar book available on the German navy?
