Sophisticated sonar.

German sonar had gotten quite sophisticated toward the end of the war. The advanced GHG was using 192 transducers. However, the ½ deg accuracy was achieved with a shorter range active/passive device (set to passive) which was also used to measure target range, course and approximate speed.
You can read all about it in E. Roessler's book on U-boat sonar, provided you can find a copy. I have been trying to buy it for 6 months without success, but it appears to be available in a few naval libraries.
