I believe the electric motors on the U-Boats were the generators when the diesels were engaged. An electric motor automatically becomes a generator when it is turned.
Does anyone know how the diesel engine speed was controlled? Was it by a standard throttle arrangement of fuel and air flow, like any other engine, or was it controlled by shutting off or starting individual cylinders? The reason I ask this is the U-505 in Chicago hasd a recording of one of the engines being run fairly recently and they only have several of the cylinders operating. I am assuming this is because of problems with the engine but I also wondered if this is how the engine may have been throttled.
