I have read in books and other accounts by U-Boat men that they would run one screw when recharging sometimes. They did just like Enrique stated, disengage one screw and use its diesel to run the e motor for generating while using the other engine to power the boat. I would imagine that it required an adjustment of the rudder to compensate, but I do not know that for a fact. However, it was within the design parameters to power the boat with one engine while charging with the other. It speeds things up so that if they had to dive then the batteries had more power available. The downside was that the boats speed would be seriously diminished while performing in this manner.
