I wonder how successful the "leighlight" system were. My experiences at sea at night is that you can usually hear an airplane before you can see it. If someone were to fly around looking for me with a big "flash light", then it is pretty evident that I would see him way longer before he sees me and would simply crash dive and be gone. How ever without a flash light I might stay on the surface believing that I might be a passing airplane.
Most U-Boat captains crash dove extremely fast when it came to airplanes, many times so fast that some of their crew didn't make it in time and got washed overboard.
