Fascinating thread folks. Mine Gut! Are you all submariners or are you guys really serious afficionados? I consider myself to be in the latter category but I sure as hell don't hold a candle to you folks when it comes to general sub knowledge!
This forum is a good learning tool. Good show!
Now, I have a few questions:
Why did subs go from a double prop to a single? Was it to eliminate, entirely, any imbalance and thus noise? Joe also mentioned something about a "cruciform tail empennage". Joe, you'd best explain that $50 dollar word to me!
One further question: we've discussed the hull designs and it is pretty much agreed upon that U-boats were really a diving boat and not a submarine and that their form was more suited to surface travel. Now, how well do today's subs travel on the surface? Is the imblalance now in the other direction?
Finally, I had earlier asked about the breathing air supply system on a U-boat: whether it was supplied by compressed air tanks or was it simply drawn from whatever was trapped in the hull after it dove? One gentleman mentioned oxygen candles which I have never heard of.
Thanks people. Very interesting forum. Gotta love it.
