Hi!
Well finally I've got information we are all looking for!! The only destroyer that could it be is ORP PIORUN, famous Polish destroyer. Ricky if you want to know something more about PIORUN just tell me and I will do that.
According to my books (Groener "Die Deutschen Kriegschiffe ..." 1999 edition) U 1020 was lost in January 1945 in unknown possition. From E.Kosiarz "Flota Bialego Orla" I konw that in January 1945 PIORUN with two other British destroyers ESKIMO and NUBIAN was patroling the area near Orkney on anti-submarines patrols. Have you spotted those names during your research on that case?
No such accident as attack on enemy submarine during period January 1945 - May 1945 was desricbed by any Polish source. Sadly I don't have any details about duty of PIORUN in that time.
Is it possible that ONSLAUGHT and PIORUN destroyed U 1020?? Or maybe the other destroyer was British one?? As you said Andreas I think that there were no survivors from U 1020. And why Rohwer mentioned the name of the British destroyer and doesn't know name of the Polish one???
Well many questions but I think that the story is very interesting, and worth to solve it out.
Hope to hear from you soon,
Andrzej
