According to Axel Niestle's German U-Boat Losses During World War II (which has increased the amount of unknown causes)
U-1020 commisioned 16/05/44 and lost with all hands after the 31/12/44, left Kristiansund on the 24/11/44 under the command of Oberleutenant zur See O. Eberlein. No allied ship or plane is credited with the sinking of U-1020.
"U-1020 was ordered to operate off the Moray Firth and to the south of it on the Scottish east coast. No signal was received from it after sailing from Kristiansund. The boat however must have torpedoed the British Destroyer HMS Zephyr in its patrol area on 31December 1944 as no other boat reported an attack. When U-1020 subsequently failed to return to Stavanger, it was posted as missing in its operational area effective 3 January 1945. In the absence of an allied attack to account for its sinking, there is presently no known explanation for its loss. There is, however, a possibility that U-1020 was lost to mining on the British minefields within it operational area"
Jurgen Rohwer's Axis Submarine Successes 1939-1945 has U-1020 on the 31/12/44 at 0330 hours sinking the British destroyer HMS Zephyr at position 58-57N/04-00W. There are no additional comments.
The German grid position of U-1020's sinking is AN18.
