I bet the Americans had one welding technique the Germans lacked. Welds are stronger on flat welds than they are on overhead welds. This means that the top of the sub is stronger than the bottom. In order to get arround this, the Manitowoc ship yard would roll the whole sub, like a chicken on a spit. That way all welds were flat welds.
