I read the book you refer to. I remember the book telling how an 'R' boat captain while on the bridge in heavy seas, would keep his foot on the hatch cover. When the boat plowed into a wave, he would kick the hatch closed so the boat wouldn't flood. Of course, the guys on the bridge had to hold their breath and wait for the boat to come back up.
