Several u-boat gruppen operated of the coast of South Africa. There is no recorded instance of the sinking of a u-boat other than several off the Cape coast (UIT122 ? being one) but none off the Zululand coast in spite of the presence of Catalinas of 262 sqn RAF and late 35 sqn SAAF operatin gfrom LAke St Lucia and Lake Umsingazi. There is a strong but unconfirmed rumour of a U-boat being depth-charged and sunk off the Zululand coast by a Catalina from 262 Sqn RAF - late one night and close inshore near Cape Vidal. A possible crewman on the aircraft was the late Frank Jex. Does anyone have any information that could shed light on this one?
