I don´t know how big a target had to be but the radar of the Kriegsmarine was very bad. 1939 two U-Boats were equipped with a improved "DT-Gerät" but the U-Boat-Commander judged it "only sufficient". later more U-Boats were equipped with the "Hohentwiel" radar from the Luftwaffe. But this wasn´t good enough too and there was no longer a use for it. At this time it was to dangerous to operate or attack on surface.
