In Iron Coffins, Werner's boat sinks in a training exercise, when they raised her they found one room, which they thought had been sealed, had in fact flooded because one of the voicepipes from the coning tower had been left open.
On Royal Navy submarines and surface boats, the caps on the ends of the voice tubes were fitted with a whistle. To attract attention at the other end, all one had to do was blow sharply down the pipe and the whistle would sound. Very ingenious.
