Wet Batteries

The batteries were stored under the floor and also served as ballast.Water was continuously coming into the boat when opening the conning tower hatch and due to other reasons .How did they prevent the batteries from getting wet .If wet could they exclude wet sections from the power supply. What would happen if they all got wet.Thanks
