The batteries were stored in 2 sections ,one group fore the other aft, both well away from the conning tower hatch . The battery compartment were not watertight but the only time there would be a problem would be if the battery cracked and the battery acid mixed with the sea water and making deadly chlorine gas. If the boat was to flood up to the top of the batteries 2 things may happen: 1) if fresh water ,little would happen,you can run motors with the batteries under fresh water and not much will happen or 2) if salt water bridges the battery terminals a direct short can result. Any damaged battery cell can be jumped and bybassed if needed.
