Well, it sounds like that the Americans were very conservative with their depth ratings. The only info I had to go on for the depth rating was the official specs listed in books and on another website called subnet.com.
As for the quality of workmanship, in peacetime I would give the edge to the Germans. I worked with one years ago working on IBM check processing machines. I would drive him nuts by eyeballing the critical adjustments that I knew could be eyeballed. He on the otherhand, if the specs called for 30 milli-inches, + or - 5, then he would insert a 30 milli-inch feeler guage and would not be happy until it was precisely 30 milli-inches! In wartime however, the attitude was typical of my aunt, who worked in a B25 factory. She said you never know who's son may be in the plane, tank, jeep or what have you, who's life may depend on the equipment working properly.
