A friend of mine serviced TBFs aboard USS Bogue. When the ordnance guys loaded a Fido, it was brought up in a crate to keep it concealed, and mainenance guys had to stay away for awhile until the Fido was loaded and the bomb bays closed. He knew of the Fido, but called it "Zombie" and was told it was a mine. That was in '43, and security may have been different on USS Guadalcanal in '44.
Not the least remarkable thing about the TBF Avenger was its ability to carry a Fido, two 500-pound depth bombs, radar, flares, sonobuoys and listening gear, and lots of other goodies, and still operate from short flight decks.
