Lookout duty was a chore,it is no fun looking a 90 degree sector ,up and down, left and right for 4 straight hours ! U-boat commanders would arrange games on board to keep the men occupied as a prize the winner would not have to stand watch for that day. Early in the war a U-boat may relax the watch ,in certain area's a catpain would allow the crew to go in for a swim but as the war went on the allies had ASW ships and planes everywhere and being lax meant death ! Being on watch was no fun ,try standing on a pitching, rolling deck in the North Atlantic during a hurricane with huge mountains of water crashing over the conning tower and on top of you with only a leather and metal strap holding you.
