Can anyone tell me how much noise was generated by the e-motors? I have read several references to U-boats silently approaching the dock under electric power. Was there an audible hum that lookouts could hear topside? What about when running submerged? Was there a subdued sound...vibration? Maybe they just seemed to be silent in comparison to the roar of the diesels?
