Are you looking at the area roughly at the (fore and aft) center of the keel? An area where the cross section would look like a triangle? That would be the area that Steve was describing.
Or.....are you looking at the holes that are in the aft, underside of the hull....just aft of the keel? It would appear that those holes allow the free-flood area to drain when the U-boat was put into drydock.
