VII Hull

In my effort to model a type VII-B. I have some questions. If you go to
www.fineartmodels.com/u-boat_08.htm, there is a picture of the hull on a
VII-C. What are the rectangular shapes shown at the base of the saddle tanks,
and also at the bottom near the keel? They appear to be in the area of ballast
tanks 2 and 4, and ballast tank 3. Coverings for water inlet? I'm guessing they
would be on both sides of the hull. Also, notice the keel "cutout." I don't
see this on any line drawings. Is this correct? What was the purpose? Maybe
some day soon I will start to build this model instead of wondering how to
make it accurate. :) Thanks y'all.
