That's a very good question.
**so far** I haven't been able to find any photographic proof that these two upgrades were done separately.....but I think we need to accept the possibility that it could have happened.
The nice thing about that Amati kit is the etched decks....but it makes it that much harder to make changes. For example, by leaving out that central teardrop-shaped duct, you have something that is much more like the U-47. (You'd need to add the side, vertical vents...but that's pretty straight-forward.
You might try contacting the folks at ModelExpo who I believe are the importers of that kit. I have heard from others that they are very responsive to supplying replacement parts for the kit. Perhaps you could get another (2nd) conning tower deck and use it to 'cover' the opening from the to-be-removed duct?
I'll look for VIIB photos with the original wintergarden and that teardrop-shaped duct. I'm fairly sure that U-48 was in that configuration.
