The typical diving endurance of most classical designs, Type VII or IX, was one day, however, this could be stretched by using rebreathers to absorb CO2. With practically the whole crew on rebreathers and minimal use of electricity the maximun was probably around 3 days.
The snorkel changed everything in that the U-boat could now stay down indefinitely. I recall the record was over 70 days.
The Type XXI has a central CO2 absorption system which made everything much more comfortable and could stay down fully operational for at least 3 days (72 hrs at 5 knots) and up to a week by stretching the battery power. This is obviously without using the snorkel.
