Twin screw ships are typically more maneuverable than single screw ships. They can usually back out rather than turning in a circle; and may be able to twist in place by running one screw forward and the other in reverse. Shallow water operations were timed around the tides -- either to take advantage of an exceptionally high tide, or to operate on the incoming tide so a grounded sub might quickly be floated off. But the answer to your 1st and 2nd questions may ultimately depend less on the technical capabilities of the boat than on the confidence of its captain. =AL=
