Hi Kurt:

In others WWII submarines it was necessary roughly pointing the torpedo tube,(ie. the prow for forward torpedo tubes) to the target.Their aiming system had certain off-set capability but once they locked the target, had to keep fixed their course until the torpedo was fired.
U-Boats and US subs had the attack computer that continually actualized the firing solution to the torpedo inside the tubes, despite their own changes of course.

So once locked a target, an U-Boat/US sub could fire with high hit probability, despite they made almost(+) any changes in their course.


(+) It would have been a torpedo waste to fire with a ie.:forward torpedo tube, to a target bearing more than 90 degrees from the prow.
