S boats were quite primitive, and fared very poorly during the early war years (\'41 - \'42 for us yanks). They were then withdrawn to schhol service.
They had a large littany of mechanical trouble. In Pacific operations I don\'t remember hearing of one that leaked as bad as in (the movie that shall not be named). I am not familiar with US sub operations in the Atlantic, other than that they acomplished very little.
