Yes John they were sensitive and no problem with QRM with radio silence being observed. Yes Spark was officially banned at the 1938 Radio Conference agreement but I was on a tanker which had a QG Spark transmitter for an emergency TX in 1943. Use to fire it up when in port and boy what a racket and smell of ozone. During the war when sailing near Spain and Portugal and The Azores the Spanish and Portuguese ships were active on 500kcs with spark and they had the air to themselves as they were about the only neutrals apart from Swedish ships on the air. 73\'s
