Pic. U883 Can anyone identify ?

On page 127 of \"The German Navy in W.W.2\" by Jak Showell u-883 is shown docking at Wilhelmshaven in May 1945.
On her starboard side there is what appears to be a fan type fitting with a square type structure in front of it , it appears to be roughly45 cm in diameter can anyone tell me what is as for. (this was a type IX d 2 boat.).
