More than likely when they mentioned overhaul, the diesel portion would have been a top overhaul...cylinders, heads ,injectors, pumps. With the diesels turning 1400-1500 rpm the bottom end would have lasted a very long time...(years). If seawater entered the crankcase it would be a completely different story.The betteries were individual cells and could have all been replaced very quickly with enough manpower. If they meant the boat itself was \"overhauled\", that would have meant drydock and reading about the subpens the Germans had very good facilities for that too.
