Anti-Torpedo devices in WWI

Hello to all,
I was reading a book on Gallipoli recently and in it was a picture of a British destroyer with \"anti-torpedo\" nets on the sides. Basically this device resembled a fishing boat with outriggers extending out from the decks with a cargo net attached to the outriggers ringing the boat. This device extended out probably 3 meters from the ship. Was this a successful anti-torpedo device or just another folly? To me it seems that it could only be marginally successful.
