Technology and Operations
Hi Frank,Al,and Bob!
The British 2 500 ton Catapult Merchant Ship FIDELITY,(ex-Le Rhin),
under Lt de Vaisseau C A M Peri, commisioned in Western Approaches Command,
but sailing under a Free French crew, wich was sunk in ONS-154 on 30 Dec 1942,
had the Admiralty´s net defence against torpedoes.
According to British historian Roskill this protection was fitted to 768 ships in all,
and it certainly saved some of them, but it slowed the ships down,
(FIDELITY was a straggler at the time of the sinking),and was difficult for the crews
to handle in heavy weather.
During the eve of 29 Dec U-225,Leimkühler, missed FIDELITY with torps at 21:38,
and at 22:00-23:00 hrs U-615,Kapitzky,fired 5 torps at her,but all missed or hung up in FIDELITY´s net defence.
It took 2 more torps at 16:38 on 30 Dec from U-435,Strelow,to hit & sink FIDELITY!

Best regards/Anders.
