Did submarines suffer from bends?

Having done a bit of skin diving. I am very wary of bends and air pressure. If a skin diver holds his breath and goes up to fats he can rupture his lungs. He he stays too long under water he has to be very careful about coming up. We take breaks otherwise we can get bends.
Yet when you see WW2 movies or read books somehow they never seem to be effected by it. It does not seem possible to me that a submarine can just go so quickly upwards after being so long below.
