Diving time

As a remember from my days as an aircrewman flying over the Bay of Biscay, the time it took a uboot to submerge was about 30 seconds.
If this is correct ,when did they shift from diesel to electric? Wouldn\'t the boat have to be on batteries before the hatch was closed? Can anyone spell out the sequence?
Crash dives must have been practiced to perfect the timing.

Thanks
Don
