Thanks for the informative reply, SuperKraut. Do you have timelines on the development of the schnorkels you mention, particularly the T-valve? Do you know which type was fitted to the Type XXI?
Also, can you identify the schnorkel type pictured in the photo of U-260 (Type VIIC) on this site? As I mentioned in my previous post, the caption on that photo states that there is an anti-radar covering on the schnorkel head. (go to Gallery, Diving Images, Photo set B, photo #1, of U-260 off the coast of Ireland) To me it looks like rounded housing that might not reflect radar as readily as the schnorkel mast itself. If this countermeasure was implemented, it must indicate some concern on the part of the German Navy about detection during schnorkeling.
You also state that \"the ball valve was missed 95% of the time by Allied radar\". Which type of radar are you referring to, 10cm, 3cm?
