U-boat type Viic batteries

Dear Sirs
Could anyone please supply an answer to the following questions.
1 How long would it take (in hours) for the U-boat batteries to discharge (go flat) if the boat was tied up at the quay and left idle?

2 Were batteries automatically charged when the diesel engine started up, or did they have to be switched in manually?
