Technology and Operations
Hi C.Newport,Derek,& Rainer!
I think it is interesting to find that this British Tanker ANCYLUS,
in October 1943 entered service converted as an Merchant Aircraft Carrier,
a MAC-Ship!
On 25 May 1944 U-853,having left Bergen,Norway, for North Atlantic on 29 April,
was on weather-reporting duties at 30*W,
when she was attacked with rockets by 3 MAC Swordfish from the MAC-Ships
ANCYLUS and EMPIRE MACKENDRICK.
U-853,(KL Helmut Sommer),escaped undamaged from this incident,
and even if the Swordfishes from the 18 Merchant Aircraft Carriers
operating on the North Atlantic and Gibraltar Convoy routes in spring 1944,
never sank any Uboat,
it is a fact that the Uboats had no successes against any convoy
including an MAC-Ship in its formation!
I also find it interesting that, exactly at the moment when Topp´s torpedoe
struck home on USS REUBEN JAMES,the destroyer had commenced turning,
to investigate a strong direction-finder bearing!
