C. Newport--
You know, before I sent the \"post\" button on my earlier message I almost amended my post along the lines of \"while I certainly believe you and that you have quoted your sources right, I just don\'t believe someone on a tanker would do that.\" I thank you for posting the tidbit on the Task Force Commander and originally posing the question. In short, my disbelief was aimed solely at the act itself.

For the very first time, in any of your posts, I might argue with you. (But don\'t you dare take offense because I enjoy your expertise.) I would think, like C. Newport, that a straggling tanker would be akin to a big, fat, slow, dumb three-legged zebra on the Savanah with a lion pride around. Seriously, don\'t the stats show an overwhelmingly better margin of safety in a convoy--even given blackout conditions--than straggling? Especially, a tanker, which typically occupied the safer center of these huge convoys?
I would be shocked to discover that a merchie radioed U-Boats to the locale of their convoy. Of course, I\'m really surprised to discover that a task force commander thought it possible...I would\'a never guessed.
