I never saw the function of such a TDC but I think that you could see at any time all the positions on the indicators as far as the switching to "bearing running" (Lage laufend) has been done, because it was a mechanical calculator, so all gear wheels moved together.
Concerning the spread, the angles were calculated in function of the spread width which depended of the number of torpedos and the lenght of the target. For example four times the target lenght for three torpedos.
The spread angles were given left and right of a calculated central shot.
That's at least what I understood from the documentation I have.
