According to page 31 of Robert Stern's "TYPE VII U-BOATS" , he states: "On a Type VIIC, the pressure hull was a structurre of circular cross-section, 4.7 metres in diameter at its widest. It was constructed of rolled galvanized steel ranging in thickness from 1.6cm at the bow and stern to 1.85cm at the pressure hull's widest point, the Control Room. The pressure hull was further thickened at its only naturally weak spot, the
point where the Conning Tower was connected to the main hull, to a thickness of 2.2cm."
On page 20 he also states: "This increased weight went mainly into
thickening the pressure hull to 28mm, and switching from standard ship steel to an armour grade steel."
