joe:
When the pre-war Mk 10, MK 12; and the wartime MK 13, MK 14, MK 15 and MK 23 steam-type torpedoes were issued to the fleet, they were coated with a thick-film rust preventive (TFRP) called Tectyl. It was applied with a paint brush and dried to a slightly tacky finish, and was a solvent cutback application.
The MK 24 aerial-dropped, passive-acoustic "FIDO" was painted white and bluish gray.
The MK 18 battery-powered torpedo (copied from the G7e) and the MK 27 "CUTIE" (submarine-launched) passive-acoustic torpedoes were
"Parkerized" inside and out at the Westinghouse factory in Sharon, PA .
This was a very durable, coating similar to varnish; its color was a sort
of khaki looking. The MK 28 (heavyweight) passive-acoustic submarine-launched torpedo was painted bright green.
All exercise heads were painted yellow. The warheads on the steam torpedoes were phosor bronze with the exception of the aerial-type
MK 13 torpedo; it was steel, but zinc-coated.
Hope this helps,
ROBERT M.
