Hi Robert,
I was in the Italian Navy from 1966 to 1978 but spent most of my service assigned to liaison with other Navies. I did spend time on the 6th Fleet vessels in the Med & spoke with US officers on the subject.
My experience with US torpedoes comes from having served on the former USS Dace, later MMI Leonardo da Vinci: after she was transferred to the MMI, we also received some torpedoes with the boat. Granted they were not the most recent marks. We also had German WWII torps for training purposes & I am positive some marks had self-destruct devices (inactive at the time, of course).
In case you are wondering, I legally changed my name on becoming a US citizen, Brian was the name of a good friend of mine killed in a terrible accident on a frigate (classified).
