UZO could be used underwater too. The attack periscope was used from a compartment inside and at the rear of the conning tower. The officer sat in a gondola like seat which swivelled around the periscope mast driven by foot pedal commands.

When surfaced the front of the conning tower compartment was manned by the helmsman at an auxilliary helm. At periscope depth the torpedo was aimed from withing the compartment and not from the control room where the navigation periscope was operated.
