FWIW, the introduction of a Stirling-type engine in the U-bootwaffe would have rendered the boats completely deaf to the presence of ships in their vicinity & given them away to the ASW groups due to impossibility (at the time) to completely silence the engines without going to a size which would have made the boats unwieldy. One has to keep in mind that in WWII the submarine was a submersible, i.e. a torpedo boat capable of diving, the lines were still those of a surface ship, until the design of the type XXI.
