Jews in U-boat service?

I'm trying to research a highly controversial issue of family history...we know that we had relatives fighting on both sides in WWI, and we know that many Jews served in the infantry, etc., but there are rumors/family stories that a great-uncle served as a junior officer on a u-boat during WWI!

Does anyone know anything about Jews in the imperial U-boat service? I'm just wondering generally how Jews were treated in the Imperial navy...if they never made it into the officers ranks, then it wouldn't really be worth my time trying to find his name amongst the volumes of individuals who served (everyone in the family spelled their name 3-4 different ways). He wasn't 1/2, 1/4 etc, so his Jewishness wouldn't have been "politely ignored or overlooked". Any reading suggestions would be greatly appreciated, just for general interest in the subject.
