Of course, the American submarines sank 5 million tons of Japanese merchant ships because, after that, there wasn't much more to sink.
Interesting footnote on diving depth: Some (not all) of the US Balao class boats were built using stronger (STS)and somewhat thicker steel than the rest of the class. These boats had a crush depth of just over 900 feet. That's pretty strong for the 1940s. I'm not sure how that compares with German boats. Friedman's books on US submarines give the details of the construction of these boats.
