Robert, Dan, et al:
The USS VIRGINIA-class and USS JIMMY CARTER (SSN-23)
use a S9G reactor plant with a natural circulating, scoop seawater injection system, which eliminates the use of noisy main coolant pumps while underway. This system, however, cannot be used for backing-down the sub or stopping. Main coolant pumps have to be started for these operations.
Their propulsor, similar to the propulsor on the MK 48 ADCAP
torpedo, is extremely quiet, compared to a propellor-driven boat.
