I have read very interesting discussion at www.rnsubs.co.uk. I would like to refer to the idea of running Junkers compressor when snorting. I think it's rather unlikely, that it was run when schnorcheling, as the Junkers worked on a two stroke cycle and the scavenging was sensitive to exhaust back-pressure. Moreover, Junkers exhaust could not be connected with schnorchel exhaust, so it suffered from higher back-pressure than main diesel engines (about 1 atm vs 0.1 atm).

In turn, it was standard procedure to run electrically driven compressor, and it was noisy enough, to get heard from other boat (though I think, that running main engine(s) noise was dominating).
